    What is Professional Tax (PT)?

Don’t take the term literally and don’t think that it is levied only upon certain professions like that of a doctor or a lawyer. It is a compulsory tax collected by the state from every individual who earns an income from the service of salary, a business, or a profession.

It can be thought of as a minor form of payment to the state you are working in which helps in the latter’s development. In India, the rules on the professional tax and the levied amounts vary among the states (like Karnataka, which is a part of the south, and Maharashtra and so on).

Employers are required to deduct this tax directly from employees’ salaries – if you are a sole proprietor or if you are in the field of freelancing, this is what you are responsible for as well. You should make sure that the company is up-to-date with the requirements on a professional tax or any potential issues with the same might lead the company getting audited or punished.

Who Needs to Get Professional Tax Registration?

Discovering the persons who are required to register for Professional Tax is essential at the first stage of being in compliance. Let us have a look at a brief summary of those types of individuals who generally require to get a PT certificate:

    1. Salary earners

If you work for a company, you are the one who pays the tax, but your employer is the one responsible for deducting it from your salary every month and sending it to the state government. You’ll see this as a small deduction (usually around ₹200) on your monthly pay slip.

    2. Who gets an exemption?

Running business, whether Pvt Ltd, LLP, Partnership, or even large Shop, you have a double role:

    • Entity Level: A company paying professional tax is known as a payer of tax in the entity. It would be under the Professional Tax for Enterprise (PTEC) category.
    • Employer level: Employers have to obtain PTRC to enable employees, from their salary, to pay tax. It is the professional tax registration for employers.

    3. Professionals & Freelancers

If an individual who has no employer and who works independently decides to set up a trade or a profession, the onus is on that person to pay a registered professional tax directly to the government of the state. The professionals that are covered under this include:

    • Medical: doctors, surgeons and dentists
    • Legal and Financial: Lawyers, chartered accountants, company secretaries and management consultants;
    • Technical: Engineers Architects IT Consultants.
    • Freelancers: Anyone working independently whose income crosses the threshold of the state on minimum income.

    4. Who is Exempt? (The Lucky Ones)

Besides variations in regulation given the region, some categories of people are usually not charged the Professional Tax:

    • Senior Citizens: Elderly, who are generally more than 65 years of age.
    • People with Disabilities: the persons suffering from a lasting physical or mental impairment.
    • Military: the personnel enlisted in the Army Navy Air Force, and so on.
    • Low Earners – Those earning less than the specified income range of the state that is non-taxable (for example, in some states there is no tax for individuals with an income less than ₹10,000 – ₹15,000)

Check the rules on the professional tax qualification in your area to make sure whether you qualify for the exemption or not.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between PTEC and PTRC in Karnataka?
In Karnataka, PTEC (Enrollment) is for the business entity itself to pay its own annual tax (fixed at ₹2,500). PTRC (Registration) is for the employer to deduct tax from employees' salaries and remit it to the state. Most companies need both.
What is the difference between professional tax and GST?
Professional tax is a state-level tax levied on the income earned through employment, profession, trade, or calling. It is governed by respective state acts. While professional tax is a direct tax on income, GST is an indirect tax on consumption. Both are separate registrations with different compliance requirements. A business may need both, but the liability and process for each are independent. For more details on GST, you can refer to our guide on GST registration in India.

What are the Professional Tax slabs in Karnataka for 2026?
For most of the year, the deduction is ₹200 per month for employees earning ₹25,000 or more. However, as per the recent 2025 amendment, for February 2026 only, the deduction increases to ₹300 per employee.
Is PT mandatory for a Private Limited Company with no employees?
Yes. In Karnataka, every Private Limited Company must obtain a PTEC and pay the annual tax of ₹2,500 within 30 days of incorporation, even if there are no salaried employees yet.
What are the deadlines for PT payments?
Annual PTEC: Must be paid by April 30th of every financial year.

Monthly PTRC: Must be paid by the 20th of the succeeding month (e.g., May’s tax is due by June 20th).
What happens if I delay my Professional Tax payment?
Late payments attract an interest of 1.25% per month. Additionally, the tax authorities can impose a penalty of up to 50% of the total tax amount due for non-compliance.
Are there any exemptions for PT in Karnataka?
