What is IEC Registration?
Before engaging in the international trade activities via importing or exporting of goods and services, all businesses or individuals need to obtain an Import Export Code (IEC). It is a 10-digit identification number provided as per the Ministry of Commerce’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
An IEC is linked to the applicant’s PAN. Importing or exporting internationally without an IEC is not lawful under a law, except for certain categories which are exempt and are notified by the government. IEC registration can entirely be done through an online mode via DGFT portal. IEC is a legal document to be presented to foreign trade parties plus business documents and is valid for the entire lifetime, subject to periodic updates as prescribed under the Foreign Trade (FT) Policy.
